As part of their fundraising for ACE, Penzance - Madron Beaver Scouts put on a pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, on Wednesday 11th December.

Lunch in Scarborough

Val Humphreys held another fundraising lunch at her home in Scarborough on Wedneday 20th November.

As usual, the funds raised were split between ACE and Val's personal support of Denis Musasizi in his medical studies at Kampala International University.

She wrote -

The 'Lunch at Val's', in aid of ACE and university fees for Denis, was a huge success and was attended by 26 people.

With the help of Katharine and Jane we served 16 with fish pie and 10 with chilli con carne. The dessert was apple crumble with custard or ice cream, followed by tea or coffee and a mint chocolate for all.

There was also the usual raffle. The total made on the day was 402.00. I am sending a cheque for 200 for ACE.

The other half I have put into the account where I keep money given for Denis.

The ACE trustees are very grateful to Val and her family and friends for their continued support.

Beaver Scouts Sale of Books and Toys

Penzance-Madron Beaver Scouts are fundraising for ACE and we are very grateful to them for their support.

Following on from their successful Quiz Night, they held a sale of books and toys on Saturday 16th November and raised a further £52.

Open Studio

Pam Furby's Open Studio event on Sunday 10th November raised £244 for ACE funds.

There was a new collection of mounted, but unframed, affordable art for sale. Also cards, books, gifts and cakes were available, together with coffee, tea, and light refreshments.

The trustees are very grateful to Pam for again supporting ACE.

Quiz Night

A quiz night and raffle in aid of ACE took place at The Sportsman's Arms, Heamoor, on Friday 1st November.

The evening was arranged by Penzance-Madron Beaver Scout group and £100 was raised for ACE funds.

We are very grateful to Nicola Keast and the Beavers for their support.

Cream Tea in Newmill

£272 was raised for ACE funds at a cream tea at Chynoey, Newmill, on Friday 23rd August.

Visitors could also tour the garden and visit the plant stall, book stall and cake stall.

Strawberries and Cream Tea in Scarborough

Val Humphreys has held another Strawberries and Cream Tea in Scarborough.

The weather was beautiful and 55 people attended. Others, who could not attend, supported the event by buying tickets.

In addition to the tea there was also be a cake stall and a raffle.

Val wrote -

We had wonderful weather for the SCT on 16th July. Everyone was looking for a spot in the shade.

I am delighted to report that the total raised was 550.75.

Half of it is for ACE, so I am sending a cheque for 275.

The other half is to go towards Denis's 2nd year's UNI fees.

The strawberries and cream were all given for the event once again by Giulian Alonzi, owner of The Harbour Bar. Giulian delivered to me 40 punnets of strawberries, knowing I would make jam to sell with any left over.

I made 30 jars of Jam last Thursday. !!!!!!!!!! Now selling them to friends etc for funds for Denis.

This is Denis Musasizi, who is currently at university studying medicine, and is supported in his studies by Val.

Newmill Open Gardens

The sun shone in Newmill on 23rd June for our village Open Gardens Day.

Cream teas were served at The Old Post Office and at Chynoey.

The cake stall at Boulders was well stocked with a selection of homemade cakes and bread.

There were lots of activities at Trythall School and their choir sang for the visitors.

Entertainment was provided on the lawn at The Mill House.

Pensans Morris danced .....

..... and Blazing Hearts Chorus sang.

As usual, our village policeman kept everyone in order and controlled the traffic.

He also made sure that the £2,662 we raised got safely to the ACE treasurer.

Open Studio in Newmill

At the end of May, Pam Furby opened her studio at Bay of Biscay Cottage, Newmill, to the general public for a week as part of the Open Studios Cornwall event.

She held a raffle for a painting and served refreshments in aid of ACE.

£200 was raised for ACE funds.

Ludgvan Village Open Day

Hogus House and Church

Ludgvan held a Village Open Day on Sunday 5th May 2013.

15 gardens were open to the public and there were stalls, art displays, food and music.

The proceeds of the event were shared between ACE and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

In the distance were the stunning views of Mounts Bay.

This is the view from the Vicarage garden.

Some of the gardens were beautifully planted courtyards ....
Hogus House
.... and another was the restored garden of Hogus House, originally set out by Dr William Borlase, soon after he became rector of Ludgvan in 1722.

The stalls sold a variety of items - plants, books, leather goods ....

.... and delicious homemade bread and preserves.

Angela Peake set up a display about the work of ACE.
Luke Pye

Luke Pye, the son of Janet, who is ACE's Sponsorship Secretary, has been to Uganda twice previously and worked in the ACE-supported schools.

He set up a display as he was about to go back to the schools to carry out a tree-planting scheme. He will liase with the headteachers about the possibility of planting fruit trees which would generate food and maybe profits from sales.

He asked for donations of £1 per tree and built up two model orchards during the afternoon as the money came in.

ACE's share of the proceeds amounted to £1,203 and we are very grateful to the villagers of Ludgvan for their support.

Car Boot Sale in London Raises Nearly £500

The Futerman family have again been selling goods at a car boot sale in London to raise money for ACE.

Sam Futerman wrote -

We did a car boot sale on Saturday (4th May) and the rain just about held off which was a huge improvement on last year. We raised 324 this year which is, in large part, due to the generosity of our friends and family giving us stuff to sell. In addition to what our stall raised, our friend Abi Fox, together with her children Cameron & Jodie filled up their own car boot and joined us this year. I think they said that they raised around 160 which is a huge amount to add to what we raised.

I attach a couple of photos. This one is of our three older boys behind our stall with their banner.

The other is of Cameron and Jodie at their stall.

Finally, I have to say that it is no chore to do this. Not only is ACE a fantastic cause, but collecting the stuff and then setting up and running a stall gives our children a valuable perspective that they wouldn't otherwise experience.

The Foxes

The ACE trustees are very grateful to the Futerman family, and the Fox family, for their continuing enthusiastic support of ACE.

We look forward to meeting the Futermans when they are on holiday in Cornwall in August.

Lunch with ACE in Newmill

On Friday 19th April 2013 we invited supporters and friends to a simple lunch at The Old Post Office.

Two types of soup were prepared by our chef, Ray Kell. ACE trustee, Janet Pye, provided lots of homemade bread.

There was also a large selection of delicious cakes made by our supporters.

More of Janet's bread and marmalade was on sale and there was a large raffle table.

We were very fortunate with the weather and the large number of diners spilled out into the garden.

We were delighted that, when our treasurer had counted up the takings, we had raised £557 for ACE funds.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such a success.

Quiz Night at Zennor

The quiz at Zennor on Saturday 13th April was the annual Jeffery Rogers Memorial Quiz. ACE was chosen this year to receive the profits from the event.

ACE was well represented, and the event was so well attended that both chairs and cups ran out!

The amount handed to us at the end of the evening was 356.50 - that was from entrance fees and raffle, after taking out expenses. We were also given a 10 donation from somebody who was unable to attend the quiz. So a grand total of 366.50 was made.

Scarborough Lunch

Val Humphreys has held another successful Soup and Sandwich Lunch at her home in Scarborough.

The event, held on 26th February 2013, was attended by 25 people and raised £340.

Half of the money raised has been donated to ACE.

The other half of the money is going towards Val's continuing support of Denis Musasizi, who is currently at university studying medicine.

Val met Denis several years ago when she was in Uganda. She supported him through his final years of secondary education at Kisoro Vision School, under the umbrella of the ACE Student Sponsorship Scheme.

The ACE trustees are very grateful for the help and support of Val and the 'Scarborough branch'.
